History of the Proyecto de Americano
Between 1969 and 1972 Alan Hutchinson purchased three fincas of pasture land totaling 1,110 hectares (2,718 acres) in Nosara, a small farming and cattle raising community with no grocery store or all-weather direct roads to the outside world.  Hutchinson subdivided the land into 700 building sites with ocean or mountain views.  His plans were for forest preserves, parks, commercial zones, a sports center, tennis courts and an 18-hole golf course, which never came to fruition.  Unfortunately, his zoning restrictions were never made official and thus we are in predicament we are in today.   Without constant attention anything goes - right next door.

North of us is the Ostional Turtle Refuge where the Olive Ridley turtles nest (sometimes up to 100,000 turtles laying eggs in one night -- in an "arribada”). In 1985 the Refuge was extended south to included Playas de Nosara, Pelada and Guiones (again through much effort on the part of the NCA). The Refuge now protects the 200 meters of the 21 kilometers of the beaches of Ostional, Nosara, Pelada and Guiones, 352 hectáreas of land and 8,000 hectares of ocean.

Over the years, life has become much easier for new arrivals. We now have a good water system, good national electricity, passable roads (most of the time), telephones, doctors, etc.  Newcomers do not know what a struggle it was, and continues to be, to maintain what we have.  Before the roads were built, building materials arrived by boat and then transported to the sites by ox cart.  Fresh vegetables came once a week if we were lucky and most goods had to brought from the states or San José.  There were no hardware stores closer than a three hour drive to Nicoya, crossing 21 rivers and streams.  Electricity was provided a few hours a day by generators.

The NCA has fought legal battles (some for over 20 years) to preserve our beaches from huge developers and has been instrumental in establishing community service organizations, which continue to enhance our total quality of life. For example, in Nosara there is the only free-lending library on the peninsula, Biblioteca Kitson, FUCAN, our local "trade school" and the NCA was instrumental in establishing a Nosara high school in 1997.
