Rain Helps Trees and Turtles Gain

Date

August may be a slow season in Nosara, but the turtles and the trees don’t know that!

Volunteers

Nosara residents and visitors continue to report sightings of nests, hatchlings, and nesting females on Playa Guiones this month. Thank you for your help! Here’s where to file your report: www.tortuguiones.org

TortuGuiones hosted another Global Leadership Adventures group in August. The volunteers cleaned up the Boca de Nosara and painted signs for TortuGuiones to be posted at beach entrances in Playa Pelada and Playa Guiones.

There are still plenty of “Keep Nosara Wild – No Driving on the Beach and Trails” stickers at Organico for a $5 donation. If you would like some to distribute, please contact TortuGuiones (tortuguiones@gmail.com).

Remember that TortuGuiones is also selling tank tops, bracelets, keychains, and tote bags with its logo. See the TortuGuiones Facebook page for items and prices, and contact www.tortuguiones.org if your business is interested in featuring any of these items.

BarriGuiones has planted more than 3,100 trees in 2016! By transplanting seedlings into bags at its tree nursery BarriGuiones has another 3,000 trees ready for planting next year.

In August more than 30 volunteers from Nosara and elsewhere helped BarriGuiones plant more than 300 trees. Thanks to these efforts, trees from the Panamá, Pecoso, Madero Negro, and Roble de Sabana species are growing in between the cemetery entrance and the Harmony path entrance. Higuerón, Majagua, Carao, Sardino, Cenízaro, Caoba, Fruta de Pava, Indio Desnudo, and Guácimo trees are planted in front of the La Negra beach entrance.

Most of the older trees were pruned in early August, and the living stakes they yielded have also been planted. The bigger Almendros were trimmed to allow them to grow taller and start offering shade to beach users.

Last year August marked the end of the planting season at the beach, but this year because of the ample rain, planting will continue through October. Two groups of volunteers are scheduled in September and October, and the nursery has many trees big enough to be transplanted.
