High Season is Coming

Date

Even though the beaches look empty this time of year, turtles continue to nest and trees continue to grow. TortuGuiones and BarriGuiones take advantage of this quieter time to prepare for high season.

In September, new signs appeared at the main beach entrances of Guiones. These signs, sponsored by TortuGuiones and the Nosara Civic Association, are intended to make residents and visitors aware of the Ostional National Wildlife Refuge and its regulations and to show that the Beaches of Nosara are important components of the refuge.

One of the most important of these regulations prohibits motorized vehicles on the beach. TortuGuiones still has “Keep Nosara Wild – No Driving on the Beach and Trails” stickers available. If you would like some to distribute, please write to tortuguiones@gmail.com.

As a member of the Rio Nosara Biological Corridor committee, TortuGuiones is teaming up with several other organizations to create a comprehensive, cohesive environmental education program for the area within the corridor. Watch for more news of this program in coming months.

Beach walkers, runners, and surfers continue to report sea turtle nests and hatchlings on Guiones and Pelada beaches. Thank you! Please keep TortuGuiones informed by filling out a report: tortuguiones.org.

BarriGuiones planted 3,120 trees this year! Now that this year’s planting is largely done, the organization is focusing on maintenance. In September, this meant mulching and chopping. Placing wood ash on each tree planted this year serves as a ground cover and helps retain moisture on the upper layers of the ground surrounding the trees. Mulching also prevents weeds from growing in the area immediately surrounding the trees.

Chopping a circle around each tree keeps away predators, parasites, and competition. It also makes the tree more attractive. This work will continue throughout rainy season, and starting in October fertilizer will be added to the trees as a way of pushing their growth as much as possible before the dry season starts.
